Physical Education
The PE and Games curriculum provides opportunities for students to learn purposeful practical activities that will lead to their own positive physical, social, mental and emotional growth. The overriding aim of the PE and Games Department at Canbury School is to instil in students a lifelong love of being physically active.
Department Objectives
- To encourage the development of physical literacy and help to promote physical development.
- To develop an understanding of the basic strategies and terminology associated with individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities.
- To develop an appreciation of skillful and creative performances across the areas of activity.
- To encourage the ability to work with others in a variety of situations.
- To foster an understanding of the need for a safe and healthy working environment.
- To understand basic fitness principles and the importance of an active lifestyle.
- To encourage the development of positive personal qualities such as tolerance, fair play, enthusiasm, and self worth.
- To encourage responsibility for one’s own learning.
Curriculum
The school offers a PE and Games curriculum to all students. Games lessons are delivered in the afternoon, with a variety of off- site sporting activities. PE lessons are taught on- site making use of the indoor and outdoor space at the school.
Games
- The activities on the Games curriculum include Watersports, Cross Country, Badminton, Squash, Football, Dance, Cricket, Athletics, and Tennis.
PE
- The activities on the PE curriculum include Basketball, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, HRF, OAA, Handball, Tchoukball & Cricket
Academic PE
As an option at Year 10 students at Canbury have the chance to select the BTEC Level 1/ 2 Tech Award in Sport as one of their KS4 options. This is a two year course, where students will have three one hour lessons of BTEC Sport per week.
When starting Year 12 we offer the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport as an option. This is a two year course equivalent to one A Level, where students will have four one hour lessons of BTEC Sport per week.
Competitive Sport
Students at Canbury have a full calendar of inclusive, competitive sports to participate in throughout the year. An extensive inter house sporting competition is run including cross country, basketball, football and an annual Sports Day in the summer.
Canbury is also part of the Surrey Special Schools Sports Association (SSSSA) which offers termly inter school sporting tournaments for our students in football, badminton, dance and yoga, unihoc and cricket.
Extracurricular activities
There are a vast array of sporting extracurricular activities for students to participate in at Canbury. There is a weekly multi-sports session along with self- defence and fencing classes delivered by outside coaches.
