ASDAN Employability
Employability is a practical and engaging subject that equips students with the essential “soft skills” and personal attributes needed to succeed in any workplace. Unlike technical skills that are specific to a particular job, employability skills are transferable and highly valued by all employers, regardless of the industry. The course focuses on developing core competencies such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, digital literacy, and resilience, which are crucial for navigating a successful career path in the modern world.
Through a portfolio-based approach, students will gather evidence to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, ensuring that their achievements are formally accredited and recognised, providing them with a valuable and nationally-recognised qualification to support their transition into further education, training, or employment.
Key Topics:
The program is based on the key areas and units outlined in the ASDAN specification, which include:
- Self-management: Understanding personal strengths, setting goals, and taking initiative.
- Team Working: Collaborating effectively with others to achieve a common goal.
- Applying for a Job: Developing skills in CV writing, preparing for interviews, and understanding the job market.
- Learning through Work Experience: Gaining practical experience and reflecting on skills gained in a real-world setting.
- Rights and Responsibilities at Work: Understanding the legal and ethical aspects of being an employee.
This course is taught as part of our 6th Form curriculum and students have 4 hours a week of lessons. Students also undertake one day a week of work experience throughout their time at Canbury School, which feeds directly into this qualification.
Assessment Criteria:
Students must complete 6 credits worth of units in total, and must include at least one unit from the Core units group. The remainder of the credits can be achieved through either Core or Additional units. Students normally complete all units at the same level; however there is the flexibility to choose units from the level above or below the qualification outcome, if appropriate.
We aim for most students to complete the course with at least a Level 2 Award, which is equivalent to half a GCSE at pass mark.
