Sports Provision

Games is taught in Key Stage (KS) groups. Within Games, students are set into groups of roughly equal ability for each sport. Winter sports include sports such as cross country, kayaking, football and netball. Summer sports include sports such as athletics, cricket, tennis, and rounders. Teams turn out throughout the year on midweek in interschool matches.

In PE lessons, classes are year group only, so are mixed ability. Activities such as basketball, badminton, gymnastics and health-related fitness are taught in order to provide a wider diversity of opportunities for students.

BTEC Level 2 Award: Sport

Sport at Canbury is about more than just what happens on the pitch. The BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Sport is designed for students who are passionate about physical activity and want to understand the science, psychology, and business behind the sporting world.

Why Choose BTEC Sport?

This course is perfect for students who prefer a “learning by doing” approach. It balances physical performance with theoretical understanding, allowing students to explore how the body works and how to coach others to success. Whether you are an aspiring athlete, a future coach, or interested in sports therapy, this qualification provides a competitive edge.

Core Areas of Study

The curriculum is divided into three key components that build a comprehensive understanding of the industry:

  • Preparing Participants to Take Part in Sport and Physical Activity: Explore the different types of provision and equipment required for different participants, and learn how to remove barriers to participation.

  • Taking Part and Improving Other Participants’ Sporting Performance: This is where theory meets practice. Students will develop their own techniques and learn the art of officiating and sports leadership.

  • Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants’ Performance in Sport and Physical Activity: Discover the various fitness components and training methods, learning how to design personal fitness programs that get real results.

Skills You Will Develop

Beyond physical fitness, BTEC Sport students develop a suite of transferable professional skills:

  • Leadership: Gaining the confidence to lead groups and manage teams.

  • Analytical Thinking: Learning how to break down performance data to identify strengths and weaknesses.

  • Resilience & Discipline: Understanding the psychological mindset required for elite performance and personal growth.

Students who choose the BTEC Level 2: Sport option for Year 10 and 11 will have 3 hours a week on their timetable allocated to this subject.Â
