Science at Canbury School

Science at Canbury School is an exciting and dynamic subject, taught in a well-equipped laboratory with generous curriculum time that grows as students progress. Our five-year curriculum builds knowledge step by step, preparing students for success in exams and beyond.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–8)

Students in Years 7 and 8 enjoy four hours of science lessons each week. Using the Activate 1 and 2 coursebooks from Oxford University Press, they explore Biology, Chemistry, and Physics through engaging lessons and hands-on investigations. This strong foundation equips them with the knowledge and skills needed for GCSE study.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9–11)

From Year 9, science provision increases to five hours per week, rising to six hours in Years 10 and 11. Students follow the AQA GCSE Combined Science course, covering Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in depth, leading to two GCSE qualifications.

From Year 10, students are placed into Foundation or Higher Tier sets. This ensures teaching is tailored to ability, giving every learner the best chance of success. Lessons are interactive and supported by online resources such as Kerboodle for digital textbooks and revision, with assessments delivered using ExamPro.

Practical Science

Practical work is central to our curriculum. Across all five years, students take part in regular experiments and investigations, developing their ability to think critically, solve problems, and apply science to real-world contexts.

Inspiring Futures

Our science curriculum is designed not only to secure excellent GCSE outcomes but also to inspire curiosity, confidence, and ambition. Students leave with the skills and mindset to thrive in A-level study, STEM careers, and lifelong scientific exploration.
